Food Projects

The New Forest has a wealth of good quality local food. Locally produced food travels shorter distances, reducing transport emissions and benefits the local economy through people spending money in the local area.

Our projects encourage individuals, families and schools to grow or raise their own food, learn new skills and prevent food waste. They promote local farmers, producers, shops and outlets that grow and supply local food.

This amazing local project brings together people who have fruit trees in their garden but can’t pick the fruit, with volunteers who want to help by spending a couple of hours picking in a group. The fruit is then shared between the garden owners, the volunteers and the community. Fruit pickers are available loan out and events such as chutney making are held in September and October.

There is an Abundance Lymington Facebook page where details of picks will be posted, or call Emily Hamilton for more information 07779 100187

If you’ve got a glut of apples or pears and want to turn them into juice or cider then help is at hand! The Ashurst and Colbury Community Group received a grant from the New Forest National Park Authority a few years ago to buy some juicing equipment for community use. There are 3 sizes of apple presses, each with its own fruit crusher (or scratter) and some telescopic pickers to help you reach all your fruit! The equipment is available for anyone to borrow in exchange for a small donation. Just follow the link below for all the info about booking etc.

The core members of our allotmenteers are drawn from a Transition group, but we have been joined by many others with no affiliation to any group! Transition Lymington is part of the larger New Forest Transition  hub. We are a grass roots association of people of different ages and backgrounds who all share a common desire to do something practical.
